Music in church
Singing offers us one of the richest ways of expressing ourselves and communicating. And when we sing in church, it offers something even greater: it shows the mystery of the liturgy, by taking us outside the humdrum of spoken language. It gives us instead a more profound means of expressing God’s love for us, and our own love for God.
In the words of Pope Francis, music gives us “a sense of the glory of God, of his beauty, of his holiness”. Singing together unites our hearts by uniting our voices, and gives us, gathered together to praise God through his Son Jesus Christ, a wonderful glimpse of the heavenly banquet.
Music at Our Lady’s
At Our Lady’s we try to sing God’s praises in as many different ways as we can! On a typical Sunday you might hear us singing traditional hymns, sacred songs from recent decades, choral music from the Church’s treasury, Gregorian chant, new music written by one of our members... Every kind of music can be prayer for someone, and we try to reflect that in what we sing. You’ll hear us accompanied by our versatile group of instrumentalists, or by one of our organists and pianists, or sometimes the simplicity of just our voices. Above all, you’ll hear everyone joining in! We know that the most important voice to be heard is that of everyone singing together: truly a sign of Christ’s body, the Church, worshipping as one.
Our choir helps make this happen, and we’d like you to join us. Some of our singers can read music, but some can’t, and we learn patiently so that no-one is left behind. Come and sing with us: everyone is welcome! Rehearsals are on Mondays at 7.00 pm in the Upper Hall, beginning after the summer break on Monday 7 September. Talk to one of us after Mass on a Sunday, if you’d like to get involved.

St Peter's has a fine choral tradition with a strong choir and organ. Practices are held on Sunday mornings in the church. A variety of Mass settings is used and an anthem is sung each week. Occasional concerts are given in addition to the popular Christmas Carol Service each year. The choir is always open to new members - please speak to Anne-Claire our director, or Christine our organist, or to any choir member (you can catch them coming down from the choir loft after Sunday Mass) or to Fr Stephen,

Here are some of our songs, recorded during the Covid-19 pandemic when we couldn’t get together in person. Everyone recorded themselves at home, and then the voices were mixed together to make these recordings. There are singers both from Our Lady’s and St Peter’s choirs, and the recordings are a happy memory of coming together in difficult times.
