The Sacrament of Marriage

Are you planning your wedding in Catholic Leamington?
If you would like to get married in one of the Catholic Churches in Leamington please speak to one of the clergy who will be able to talk you through the formalities and the options for your wedding and marriage preparation. Please give as much notice as possible to book and plan your wedding - this must be at least 6 months.

There can be no greater start to life together as a married couple than a Church wedding, promising to give yourselves totally to one another and asking God to bless the union. The sacrament of marriage is a lifelong and faithful union of a man and a woman mutually committed to sharing their life and love together.

Who can get married in the Catholic Church?

• Practising Catholics and sometimes those who have not been to church for a while.
• Catholics marrying Christians of another denomination or someone who belongs to a non-Christian faith or religion.
• Catholics whose partner does not belong to any particular faith or group.

One partner at least must be a baptised member of the Roman Catholic Church

Documentation that will be required to marry in a Catholic Church:

The following documentation is required by the Church and Civil authorities:

• Written evidence that you are both free to marry. This is straightforward if neither partner has been married previously. If either or both partners have been married, this is more complicated and the priest will be able to advise you as it depends on the circumstances.
• The baptism certificate for the Catholic partner (and the non-Catholic partner of they have been baptised) . The church where the baptism took place can issue a copy)
• Confirmation certificate for the Catholic partner.

Marriage as a Sacrament

Marriage has been a feature of human culture from the beginning of time. In the Catholic Church marriage is more than a natural institution, it was elevated by Christ Himself at the wedding at Cana, to be one of the seven sacraments. “On the threshold of His public life Jesus performs his first sign, at his mother's request, during a wedding feast. The Church attaches great importance to Jesus' presence at the wedding at Cana. She sees in it the confirmation of the goodness of marriage and the proclamation that thenceforth marriage will be an efficacious sign of Christ's presence.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1613) Marriage is a Sacrament with a lasting effect, as the couple can access the grace that God gives through the sacrament for the rest of their lives.

The Essence of the Sacrament
Unlike other legal contracts, the marriage contract is based on love. It is an open-ended contract, "for better, for worse." In marriage the couple make an unconditional promise, not knowing where the promise will lead or what keeping the promise will entail. This unconditional promise is the essence of Christian marriage.

The grace of marriage helps the spouses to support one another and it helps them to cooperate together in God's plan of redemption by raising up children in the Faith.   The papal encyclical, Humanae Vitae, written by Pope Paul VI in 1968, provides beautiful and clear teaching about God's plan for married love and the creation of new life.

Pope Francis gave the following advice to engaged couples in Rome:

"Make your wedding a real celebration, because marriage is a celebration. A Christian celebration, not a worldly feast!  What happened in Cana two thousand years ago, happens today at every wedding celebration. That which makes your wedding full and profoundly true, will be the presence of the Lord who reveals Himself and gives you His grace. It is His presence that offers the 'good wine', He is the secret to full joy, that which truly warms the heart.”

"It is good that your wedding be simple and make what is truly important stand out. Some are more concerned with the exterior details, with the reception, the photographs, the clothes, the flowers. These are important for a celebration, but only if they point to the real reason for your joy: the Lord's blessing on your love."
