SPAN held its first meeting in December 1973!
Over 2024 we will celebrate our 50 years:
On Friday February 9th 2024 we will have a quiz night with the general theme '50 Years' and in early June we hope to have an information and sharing evening.

At our November meeting we supported Darfur in Sudan, Children of the Dump in the Philippines, Would Medical Fund for mobile clinics in Malawi and heard about 'Young People First' working in South Leamington. See November minutes below.

September 2023 Emergency Appeals
SPAN sent:
£ 2,300 to the Moroccan Earthquake Appeal and
£ 2,300 to the Libyan Flooding Appeal
CAFOD have sent a letter of thanks to our three churches.

SPAN meetings are held on the second Monday of each month (except August)
St. Peter’s Aid for the Needy (SPAN) was founded by parishioners in December 1973 for the purpose of bringing Christian love in practical ways to those in need both locally and overseas.

SPAN became a registered charity in 1994 – number 1040252. Since its foundation SPAN has administered donations from parishioners totalling over £1.25 million.
In 2022 SPAN distributed over  £42,000 (£ 36,400 in 2021 - achieved during a period with limited access to collection boxes in our churches).

SPAN aims to share its available funds between
local and UK needs and those in need overseas - click to see pie chart.

How to donate
Members of our parishes are invited to participate in the activities of SPAN and to donate to its work, through using church collection boxes or collection envelopes.
We achieve so much for many people, only through your support and generosity.
You can also use the Gift Aid scheme or donate by a regular Bank Standing Order.
From time to time special JustGiving campaigns are set up. Cheques should be made out to SPAN and our Bank Account has
Sort Code 402706 with Account Number 21324004.
Please contact our Treasurer if Gift Aid can be claimed. Contact details below.

SPAN is one of the main ways by which Catholics in Leamington make charitable donations.

Throughout the year
SPAN has a number of ongoing commitments, principally:
  • CAFOD e.g. regularly sending aid to refugee camps in Darfur in Sudan
  • St Francis Leprosy Hospital in Nyenga, Uganda
  • Ortum Mission Hospital, Kenya
Regular support is also given to:
  • The Warwick & Leamington Foodbank
  • The Leamington Night Shelter (until 2022)
  • 3H Housing Health Hospitality, for formerly trafficked women (until Dec 2022)
  • The House of Light and Hope (which is a home for street children in the Lebanon)
  • To priests doing pastoral work in Zambia and Uganda.
  • Funding the education of three orphans and a deaf and dumb child in Uganda
  • A feeding programme for children at a school in Zambia

Lenten Appeals
For several years, our priests have agreed to SPAN coordinating speakers to give 3 appeals at Masses across Catholic Leamington during Lent, and a collection was taken for each charity.

In 2022 we were unable to host speakers (due to the pandemic) and decided to have a combined appeal for Zoe's Place Baby Hospice in Coventry, Kindaid's Mission Hospital in Kiirua, Kenya and for our local needy by providing food vouchers. We donated £ 1,000 to both Zoe's Place and Kiirua and distributed £ 2,500 in food vouchers via our primary schools. The same 3 way appeal was held in 2023 £ 600 was sent to Zoe's Place and Kiirua.

Christmas food voucher appeal
SPAN coordinates the distribution of vouchers to our Catholic Primary School pupils who receive Free School Meals, our local refugee families and families suggested by the local Family Centres. Additionally, we have provided a Christmas cards to our housebound parishioners, with the help of our Eucharistic Minsters and the SVP.

SPAN meetings
Appeals for support are received throughout the year and are discussed at the SPAN monthly meetings, held on the second Monday of all months except August.
Careful consideration is given to each appeal, and where appropriate, a donation is made.

An Annual Review is held for the previous year sometime between May and November.
All parishioners across Catholic Leamington are welcome to attend these meetings as we are all part of SPAN.
To be added to our e-mail distribution list, please contact our Secretary:  paulhayden444@gmail.com

Our  December, January and February meetings may be held by Zoom.
